The Medicinal Role of Taste

Lime is an easily available fruit, sour in taste. The sour taste which is due to the presence of various acide is believed to be the reason for its medicinal value.

Sour taste, in terms of herbalism, acts as a stimulant, promotes digestion, increases appetite and is a carminative (helps dispel flatus). It nourishes all tissues, except reproductive tissues (shukla dhatu).
Very much like amla, this fruit is also the poor person's rich source of Vitamin C.

In Siddha Literature, wherever an unspecified fruit (kani) is called for, the practitioner uses lime fruit in preference to all others.

Home Remedies

Whitlow Make a hole in the lime and insert the affected finger and use it as a bandage
Pain in knee joint, bone joint, etc Cut the lemons into small pieces. Tie them in a cotton cloth. Dip this in hot gingelly oil, and foment the affected joints when bearably hot.
Sprain, Swelling

Grind lime leaves into a fine paste. Mix it with an equal quantity of butter. Apply on the affected areas.

Swelling and pain in legs, hand, ankle, etc Mix equal quantities of castor oil and lime juice. Massage the affected area with this mixture. (Also drink 1 cup warm water mixed with lime juice and honey)
Diabetes Mix 2 tsp lime juice in 4 tsp amla juice and 1 tsp honey. Take in the morning on an empty stomach.
High blood pressure Mix 1 tsp lime juice in 1 teacup buttermilk. Drink frequently.
Baldness, not due to hereditary factors Mix 2 teacups salt and 4 tbsp pepper powder in ½ teacup lime juice. Leave it under the sun for 3 days to dry out thoroughly. Once dry, powder and bottle. Dose: 1 tsp mixed in water, applied on bald patches at bedtime. Wash off the next morning. (Note: Avoid using any soap or shampoo.)
Bad breath, ulcer in mouth Drink lime juice in warm water after frequent gargling. Repeat.
Bleeding from the nose due to body heat Lemon juice dropped into nostrils.
Blond hair (To give blond highlights) Mix the strained juice of 2 limes in an equal amount of warm water and rinse hair with it. Leave on for 15 mts and sit in the sun if possible. Then rinse out.
Eye diseases One drop of lime juice put into the eyes every morning.
Hair loss, premature graying of hair Mix dried rind of lime, with shikakai, curry leaves, seeds of fenugreek and green gram-all in equal quantities. Powder it and use for washing hair.

Grind 1 tbsp each pulp of amla with lime juice. Massage this into the hair before going to bed. Wash it next morning.
Headache, stomach ache Take 1/2 tsp powdered leaves along with 1 tsp honey.
Throat pain Mix 1 tbsp each lime juice and honey and swallow tiny amounts slowly.
Black dots, blemishes, pimples Apply fresh llime juice on the affected areas before going to bed. Wash them with warm water nex morning.
Pimples Dry the young tender leaves of the lime tree. Powder finely and mix with turmeric powder (1:1). Use it as soap to clean the face.
Prevention of skin infections Slice a lime fruit and rub the juice all over the body before showering.
Skin diseases Grind 1 tbsp each turmeric and mustard seeds in to a fine paste. Mix 1 tsp lime juice. Apply on affected parts.
Obesity Mix lime juice with honey and water. Drink a glass of this every morning. Mix 3 tsp lime juice with 1/4 tsp powdered black pepper and 1 tsp honey along with 1 cup water and drink for 3 months.
Take 1 tsp lime juice with 1 teacup water in the morning on an empty stomach.
Mix 1/2 tsp black pepper powder in 1 tsp honey and 3 tsp lime juice. Add 1 cup water and drink daily.

A Word of Caution
Prolonged and excessive use of lime is reported to affect normal reproductive functions.
